Playwrights Project will produce its 31st annual festival of Plays by Young Writers, sponsored by the Sheila and Jeffrey Lipinsky Family Fund, at The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at The Old Globe on January 23 – January 31, 2015. The festival will feature winning scripts from its California Young Playwrights Contest for ages 18 and under.

Contest winners were selected from 269 plays submitted by students from across the state. Four scripts will receive full professional productions, and two scripts will receive staged readings in this highly regarded festival of new voices.

The Secret of Adventure

By Koushiki Bhattacharya

Age 12, Rancho Peñasquitos

Directed by Chelsea Kaufman

The Secret of Adventure tells the story of a puppy who struggles to find out what she wants: a life of freedom, or a life of comfort with her owner. Koushiki wrote her winning script in a playwriting program at Mesa Verde Middle School, which was taught by Teaching Artist Tori Rice in Ms. Kimble-Manalo’s classroom.

How did you first get involved with writing?

When I was younger I liked reading fantasy books and that got me started with writing.

How did you come up with the idea for your script?

Mostly from people  and  events around me; like when I’m around my family or friends I get ideas. Sometimes the strangest of things will inspire me.

What themes are involved in your piece?

The main theme is family and friendship.  I wanted to emphasize that family doesn’t have to be related by blood,  people that help each other and care about each other can become a family like the characters in my play.

What is the message you hope the audience takes away with them?

I want the audience to know that they can be a caring family by guiding the other family members in making a decision but ultimately support the choice the family member makes just like Mr. Mirror was supportive of Lilly.

Do you plan to continue writing?

Yes, I find it fun to do and I have a lot of ideas in my head, so I will continue to write.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A writer, a speech therapist, maybe a doctor, I am not quite sure yet.

The Secret of Adventure can be seen during Program B of Plays by Young Writers, on Friday Jan. 29th 2016 at 7:30pm, and Saturday Jan. 30th at 2pm.
