Year-End Program Report

2011 Budget: Thanks to your generous support, we were able to meet our Fiscal Year 2011 Budget!!

25th Anniversary: Playwrights Project celebrated 25 years at our 25th Anniversary party held at the Museum of Photographic Arts in November, 2010.  The evening featured a silent auction, honored Craig Noel with the Deborah Salzer Excellence in Arts Education award, and presented new scripts by former Contest winners – featuring guest television and film actor Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order and Miss Congeniality)!

In-school Playwriting Residencies: 87 in-school playwriting residencies were completed at over 30 schools throughout San Diego County.

New Play Festival: 1900 audience members were riveted by our New Play Festival, which included Plays by Young Writers and Switch, by Lisa Kirazian, a new script from Telling Stories: Giving Voice to Foster Youth.  This number includes over 700 students from San Diego County schools!

Play by Play: Cultivating Emerging Playwrights:helped playwrights develop 5 scripts during the first full year of Play by Play: Cultivating Emerging Playwrights, and presented as Staged Readings to the community.  We have expanded the age range for the program this next year, and will accept submissions from San Diegans ages 19 and up!  See the submission deadlines and process on our website.

Lifestages: Recollections: created new plays through 2 writing workshops for older adults and 4 one-on-one story collections from our Lifestages: Recollections program.  Community Performances reached over 500 audience members!

Telling Stories: Giving Voice to Foster Youth: In addition to Switch, the full length play commissioned for our first full production of Telling Stories, over 70 scripts were written during group workshops and one-on-one story collections with youth and adults involved in the foster care system, including an in-school playwriting residency at San Pasqual Academy.

California Young Playwrights Contest: 333 scripts were submitted to our 27th annual California Young Playwrights Contest.  Winners will be notified in September 2011, and then publicly announced on November 5 at our Lights Up! event at The Neurosciences Institute.  The winning scripts will be produced in April 2012 at the Lyceum Theatre in Plays by Young Writers.
