Programs & Productions
WRITING NEW PLAYS
~ School Groups, grades 3-12
A teaching artist leads students to write imaginative plays, which are read aloud by professional actors. Lessons are designed for all levels of learners and support California standards in Language Arts and Theatre.
~ Current and Former Foster Youth, all ages
In Telling Stories, a theatre artist works with groups or individuals to create scripts about life in the foster care system. Resulting scripts are performed by professional actors.
~ Adults, ages 55 and up
Participants in Lifestages/Recollections group workshops learn playwriting techniques and dramatize their experiences into original scripts. Selections are read aloud by professional actors at the end of the series.
PERFORMANCES
~ New Play Festival, for ages 12 and up
The 27th season of Plays by Young Writers features professional premieres of winning scripts from the California Young Playwrights Contest. This year’s festival also presents plays from Lifestages/Recollections.
Lyceum Theatre, Downtown San Diego, April 20-29, 2012
~ Community Readings, for ages 12 and up
Professional actors perform lively readings of scripts from various programs on the third Tuesday of each month.
PLAYWRITING CONTESTS
~ Californians, ages 8-18
Entrants to the California Young Playwrights Contest receive an individualized script critique, if requested. Winning scripts are produced in Plays by Young Writers.
Submission deadline: April 1, 2012
~ San Diegans, ages 19 and up
Play by Play cultivates emerging playwrights. Selected scripts receive one-on-one guidance by a dramaturg, readings by professional actors, and an audience discussion.
Submission deadline: August 15, 2011 and February 1, 2012
